德國(guó)哲學(xué)家本雅明（Walter Benjamin）對(duì)語(yǔ)言、翻譯和現(xiàn)代性都做過(guò)深入的思考，本書(shū)即是對(duì)他的這三個(gè)主題的綜合研究。作者認(rèn)為，本雅明把語(yǔ)言和翻譯看作是對(duì)現(xiàn)代性哀悼的隱喻，資本主義現(xiàn)代性的生活日益碎片化，并由商品文化所標(biāo)識(shí)。本雅明試圖從語(yǔ)言、翻譯中尋求本原，并由此重建原初的完整的世界，使之從人類(lèi)的欲望、貪婪和愚昧中得到拯救。
